Hi. I’ve seen your posts on the Aegis Support Board, and it seems you’ve been working on RO tools for quite a few years now. You’ve also attempted to rewrite some of your tools a few times (Rome).

I’m wondering why you don’t release your source code under an open source license. The RO developer community is, and probably has always been, rather fragmented. I’ve been around for a few years and I see people come and go - along with their tools. Someone releases SuperCoolApp written by SomeSuperDude (without source), and after a while he loses interest, quits RO. The consequence is either of the following:
    - His tool is lost forever.
    - His tool isn’t lost but becomes unmaintained, and everybody has to cope with the bugs and limitations it has and nobody can do anything about it. But his knowledge *is* lost forever.
What follows is that some one, someone else writes the same thing, from scratch. And this circle repeats forever and forever. I don’t think it’s a good thing that everybody keeps reinventing the wheel. Being open source allows the tool to become maintained even after the original author has quit. And, when managed properly, talented people can help you. I’ve been developing open source RO tools for years now and I have to say being open source has helped my projects a lot.

Long time ago, i proposed to made old ROME, open source, but no body was interested (well may be 1 or two, but they clame that they don’t know how to prog.. so…), even i put part of code to make plugins, but once again.. failed. A big part of RO community don’t know C++ , they only want binaries, may be when i retire form RO, i’ll will release the source (I gave my old ROME code to igun programmers to improve their programm). I’m aware of RO community status, some, only took code and made minor changes and claim as hims…..

Well, things like that take time. It’s not like hordes of talented people will come to you overnight. As the saying goes, Rome was not built in one day.

But what is important is that being open source opens the possibility for talented people to contribute. It is no guarantee, but it is possible, as opposed to impossible when the program is closed source. When I started OpenKore and GRF Tool, there were very little developers. As time passed, talented people came (and left) and have contributed significant improvements. Yes, most of the contributions are very small, but overall, being open source has been a huge advantage because it made possible for the few gems out there to shine.

Actually, what’s more important is this: some of our long-time developers have become more talented over time. The first time I met them they didn’t have a lot of programming experience and only write very simple code, but as time passes they became better and better, and today they are an invaluable asset of our community.

Yeah unfortunately there are some lame kids like that, but they’re usually not a problem. It has happened to OpenKore a few times too (though up until today all of them are just trojans designed to steal peoples’ passwords), but they all die within a few weeks because nobody looks at them, and after a few months nobody ever knew they existed. So far I haven’t seen anybody modifying GRF Tool and claiming it as his.
